Schedule P Part 1 without the scramble

The tie to the filed statement should be a checkpoint, not a fire drill in the last week of close.
Schedule P Part 1 asks whether your unpaid loss and LAE story matches what was filed. When it does not, someone stays late rebuilding exhibits by hand.
Start from reconciled segments. Date the exceptions. Then run the tie. Variance of zero on reconciled lines is the target, with open items disclosed.
Build the file in this order
Extract and map. Reconcile. Exception log. Triangles. Methods. Selections. Then Schedule P.
Reversing that order is how you invent numbers to force a tie.
Checklist before you call it tied:
- Segment mapping documented
- Blocking exceptions closed or disclosed
- Paid and incurred triangles refreshed
- Selected ultimates locked for the valuation
- Part 1 variance by segment
- Sign-off from the actuary who will own the opinion
Captives feel this harder when there is no in-house actuarial staff. The signing actuary needs the file ready on arrival.
numdog keeps the Part 1 exhibit next to the exception log so the two cannot drift apart.
A clean Part 1 without an exception log is a story, not evidence.
Close on a tied statement, not on hope.
